The Eastside democratic Club [the lower-case 'd' is intentional, signalling our distinction from the political party of a similar name] of Portland, Oregon, just this week heard from a representative of Extinction Rebellion, the group that has, famously, conducted a number of disruptive demonstrations such as blocking traffic and tossing soup onto priceless paintings of Old Masters in museums.

Striking in the presentation -- although politely not explicitly referred to in the question period -- was the moderating of the activities of what had been a group of self-described extremists.

The movement as a whole, Extinction Rebellion, has split in two, with one wing insisting on social justice as part of climate change activism, and the other wing, the wing characteristic of the Portland chapter, and our speaker, focussed directly on protest on fossil fuel use and development.
