Yeah, there was apparently a whole side drama going on about who would host, with Russia vetoing many other suggestions, but not objecting to Azerbaijan.

Looks like COP29 in 2024 will be in another oil producing country, Azerbaijan (2025 in OPEC member country, Brazil).
